Understanding How Dental Insurance Works
Most dental insurance plans are primarily designed to help patients afford preventive treatments like checkups and cleanings. The idea is to make it easy for a person to be proactive, enabling them to take care of small issues quickly and stop many before they ever begin. Over time, this leads to better oral health and lower care costs, because a patient doesn’t have to spend money to fix decayed or broken teeth. What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers
Your plan likely divides dental services into three basic categories, each with their own level of coverage:
- Preventive services (checkups, cleanings, X-rays, fluoride treatments) are covered 80-100%
- Restorative services (fillings, crowns, bridges, dentures) are covered 50-80%
- Cosmetic services (whitening, veneers) are elective procedures, so they are NOT covered.
These numbers are why we recommend our patients mostly use their insurance to pay for their checkups and cleanings. That way, you spend little to nothing out of pocket at your visits, and these treatments go a long way in protecting your teeth and gums from advanced issues that require more costly procedures.
